CASABLANCA

Most tourists fly into Casablanca and head straight to Marakkech. I’ve heard many people say that Casablanca is not worth seeing. I disagree. I lived in Casablanca for 2 years and although I admit, I also loved heading out to Marakkech from time to time to get away from the hustle and bustle, I still think that there are a few good reasons to stop and see Casablanca. Here’s an idea for a quick overnight. Most flights arrive early so you could spend the afternoon and evening, then head out the next day.

What to Do

Mosque Hassan II. If you arrive early enough, you can visit the largest Mosque in Africa. It is open to the public outside of prayer times. I would look at the website beforehand to be sure at what times you can visit. A tour is a good option. Sometimes, it closes earlier than other days so you don’t want to be out of luck. This happened to me once. Once you’ve visited the Mosque, I would either have lunch at La Sqala or take a walk along the sea until you reach La Corniche. There are many nice restaurants right on the ocean. My favorite is La Terrazza. After lunch, you can visit the local Souk which is in the Quartier Habbous. I really like it here. It is the newer of the markets but this is preferable. It is actually quiet and it is more relaxing than the Souks in Marrakech. You will need to get a taxi as it is a long walk from La Corniche. If you prefer to eat lunch here I would suggest Zana. Also, be sure to visit Patisserie Bennis . Here you will find the best baked goods in Casablanca. It’s a must do! .

Now, it may be time to return to the hotel where you can rest and look forward to dinner out in Casablanca. There are many great choices. I have eaten at most restaurants in the city.

An Extra Day?

If you have more than one day, I would suggest going out to Dar Bouazza. Here you will find some nice beach clubs where you can enjoy a relaxing lunch and lounge by the sea for the afternoon. My favorite is Atlantic Beach. This is the best way to see the beach in the area.

TIP: Ask your hotel to reserve both dinner and beach club (if you want to do that). I would even have this done before you arrive.
