Where to Stay
There are many ways to stay when you are in Marrakech. There are lots of hotels wearing different stars, there are “eco” hotels which are simple but usually have a nice quiet environment and then, there are the Riads.
The first two options are pretty straightforward and can be very comfortable if you would prefer a stay with more amenities. The Riad, however, is an experience. These are typical to the area and are really worth a visit. Riad’s are big and small. There is always a big entranceway with an open ceiling where you look right up at the sky. Magical. If you’re lucky, there is a pool or maybe even a plunge pool. Most Riad’s have a roof terrace where you can hang out and gaze at the evening stars and listen to the sounds of Morocco. As hotels, Riad’s have different star ratings. I have stayed in simple and fancy Riads and I would say the difference is whether there is a full staff at all times or not. A larger, more full serviced Riad will be able to prepare dinner for you and may have a bar. The smaller Riad’s can feel like a home and though they will also meet your needs, they may have to search for a solution to cater to you if you wanted dinner or a special request. This is no problem. One of the many qualities of the Moroccan people is that they will run in circles to provide you with the service you are looking for. They love to help and they love to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask. If they can’t do it, they’ll find someone who can.
I would suggest that you find a place to stay that is not too hidden in the back streets of Marrakech. This is okay if you are a group or even 2 but some of the streets at night can feel a bit daunting. I do not think that Morocco is dangerous, however, for your own comfort level, you may find it unsettling to be walking in the pitch black through a maze of streets to find your Riad/hotel. Especially if you are traveling alone. I have done this and it was fun but I was with someone and I know that we held each other tight on our way home from dinner.
