General Safety Tips for Morocco

I don’t think that Morocco is dangerous. If anything, most people in Morocco are looking out for you whether you know it or not. They take great pride in their country and want you to enjoy being there. All that said, you are still not from there and they will know it.

You will have many children and people (in general) offering to escort you to where you want to go. They’ll see that you’re lost and want to help. All of this for a small fee, of course. I wouldn’t say that this is a huge problem. If you really need help, use them. They will be so happy to help you but please give them a few bucks for their efforts. They will probably complain about the amount, this is the Moroccan way. As I’ve mentioned before, decide what it is worth to you. Sometimes, it makes you feel better to have someone walk with you or steer you in the right direction. It could be the best few bucks you spend while you are there. Marrakech is like a maze. It is sometimes difficult to maneuver through. Otherwise, just say “Non, merci”. Even better is to avoid eye contact. With everyone!

The Men:

It is very important that you be discreet. Moroccan men really enjoy flirting with foreign women. We are free, they will take a chance. If this is what you’re looking for, go for it. You will have nothing but adoring eyes from the local men. If this doesn’t interest you, I suggest that you keep your conversations with local men to a minimum. Negotiating at the market, asking directions, etc., but don’t engage in any further conversations with them. Again, do not make eye contact and certainly do not smile at them. They see this as an invitation. They will follow you and try to convince you that you need their help to get around. It is tempting. Moroccan men are good-looking and they have a certain charm. Be careful. It is all manageable but just be prepared in advance. If this happens to you, you’ll know what to do.

Most importantly, have fun and don’t worry too much. Morocco can feel a bit overwhelming, especially if you haven’t traveled much. It’s another world, for sure and that is the beauty of it.

Where to Stay:

I would choose a hotel/riad that is off of the main square. Some of the Riads are nestled in the heart of Marrakech and although this is very interesting, it can feel a bit scary in the dark. If you are alone, this may not be the right thing for you. Again, I don’t think it’s dangerous but it may not feel comfortable. I have done it. It is dark and it is like a maze. I would save this kind of adventure for the daytime. You can explore easily and discover the tiny ally ways of Marrakech but in the dark, it is not as fun.
