A Nice Drive Between Carry-Le-Rouet and L’Estaque

The last time that I was on my way home from La Plage du Rouet, I decided that I would go home via the route I noticed while on my way down to the beach. It looked like a coastal road to Marseille and I saw the signs for L’Estaque. I had never been and heard much about it. It was a nice day for a drive, so off I went and it was quite the beautiful route. The road takes you through the cliffs which on one side are hovering above and to the other side, you can walk down to all of the many little spots that would eventually bring you to Les Calanques. Niolon is one not to miss and is off this route.

I drove along, admiring the scenery, probably for about 20 minutes when suddenly I came up to a small tunnel. I almost lost my breath as I came out on the other side and saw the beautiful site of Marseille. Wow! I pulled over so that I could get out and admire the view. I was high up on a hill and the view from there was incredible. Below, I saw people sitting on a small beach and the water was a crystal clear blue/green color that was very still. You could see right down to the bottom. It looked inviting but I’m sure it’s freezing right now. From here I could see the “Marseille” sign that reminds me of the “Hollywood” sign in L.A. There was a port with lots of sailboats and there were people picnicking in many of the spots that wound there way down to the sea.

Once back in the car, I drove down the street to find myself in L’Estaque. There was a whole row of quaint restaurants and shops that looked over the harbor. I thought it was very beautiful. I have heard that this is not a great place to go but from what I could see, it looked really. nice and the people who were walking around also looked okay. Another place that I will try to get back to.

Shortly after L’Estaque, I was back on the highway which led me home to Aix-en-Provence. It was a beautiful and spontaneous day. I discovered a lot and I now have a whole new list of places that I am going to go back to and explore. It is always fun to take the road less travelled. There is so much more to see this way.
