Abbaye Notre-Dame de Senanque
What a beautiful and peaceful place to visit! The Abbey is tucked away in the Senanque valley in the city of Gordes. Upon arrival one is already taken by the peacefulness and beauty of the grounds. The Abbey is surrounded by fields of lavender and the scents waft over you providing immediate effects of calm.
This Abbey which was founded in 1148 is still functioning today, with 6 monks residing there. Retreats are available as there is a hotel on the premises. It is possible to stay for a maximum of 8 days where you will enjoy the silence and spend time reflecting in the presence and surroundings of the Cistercian Brothers.
I was fortunate to be there off season and was able to walk in without too much fuss. I suggest the audio tour as it will guide you through the various spaces of the Abbey. It’s fascinating and the fact that it is still in use makes it even more interesting.
If you are here in the high season, I suggest that you get there early because the wait can be quite long and it is hot here in the summer. Plan accordingly.
A visit to this Abbey is a must if you are in the area. It is beautiful and peaceful and it will regenerate your soul. I can smell the lavender just thinking about it.
