A Day Trip to Tangier

What an opportunity to grab a little taste of Morocco! Here you will touch down on the African continent and get a taste of the different world that is just across the Strait of Gibralter. From Tarifa, Spain there is a fast ferry, which takes about one hour. You’ll be dropped off right in the harbor of Tangier. You can take the slower ferry but it really is much longer and it is not as convenient. It’s worth the extra $$.

Once on land, you can walk straight over to the Medina and spend the morning visiting the markets (Souks). Bring your negotiating skills! There are many beautiful Moroccan products to indulge yourself in and everything you’ll see here is made in Morocco. As you’ll be on limited time, I would continue to casually wander through the souks with a goal set to arrive at the American Legation. This is a very nice and worthwhile visit, as not only is it a beautiful place to see but you will also be able to discover the special relationship between the U.S. and Morocco (which still exists).  The building is stunning and you will be transported back in time. If you’ve still got some time before lunch, head over to the Musee de la Kasbah. This is another great exhibit where you’ll learn about Moroccan heritage. The exhibits are not in English but, we enjoyed it.

Once you’ve ticked these boxes, it’s time for lunch. There are many great places along the way and you just need to pick one. We liked Salon Bleu. It is very cute, great food and it’s right in the middle of the everything. You can’t miss it.

If you have more time, take a wander down to the Corniche. It is not too far from where you’ll need to get the ferry and it’s a good way to see a bit more of the area.

*Staying the night? I highly recommend dinner at Villa Josephine. This is an expensive restaurant but the villa and the atmosphere are unmatched. It is a classy night out and again, transports you back in time. Life must have been very ritzy in Morocco back in the day. If you really want to splurge, you can stay there, too. Wanting something a bit more low key? Dar Nour, which is where you’ll find the above mentioned Salon Bleu.

Enjoy your day in Morocco!
