Saint Maximin and the Vineyards
I found myself on the D7 yesterday and thought I must share the news! In short, it's a great day out. I often take the autoroute everywhere, and it is a bad habit. The national routes are so beautiful, and this route between Aix-en-Provence and Saint-Maximin is no exception. If you like vineyards and cathedral's this day is for you!
Along this route, you will see nothing but beautiful vineyards, which means that there are plenty of wineries to visit. The scenery is breathtaking, and you will thoroughly enjoy this leisurely drive. I would make a day out of it by going to Saint-Maximin in the morning. Wednesday is market day, so it gives an extra reason to head out here. The market in St. Maximin is simple and very local. It doesn't have the "wow factor" that you'll find in the bigger cities in Provence, but the truth is, the quality was a bit better, and the prices were more manageable on the wallet. I bought a Compté (cheese) that is the best I've had in a very long time and was much cheaper than the market in Aix. We also bought a few different vegetables for lunch. When the man told me it was 5 euros, I almost fell over. I usually pay 5 euros for a couple of apples in Aix. I live in Aix, so I will still go there, but the point is, outside of the more famous cities, the quality and price are probably better.
When finished at the market, head to The Basilica of Saint-Maximin-la-Baume. which was the highlight of my visit. You can visit Mary Madeleine's crypt, where you will see her preserved skull. This Gothic Basilica is nothing more than spectacular.
There are a few options for coffee and lunch right next to the Basilica but, If you've had enough of Saint-Maximin, I'd get back in the car and slowly work your way back to Aix via the D7. You will have many opportunities to take photos of the beautiful Provencal countryside and you will drive through one beautiful vineyard after another. There are many possibilities for a good lunch along the way, and the wine tasting possibilities are endless.
Don't miss this great day in Provence!
